Educazione siberiana (2013)

Set in a small and tight-knit community of 'honest criminals' in a remote part of Russia this is a tale of an extreme boyhood - exotic, violent and completely unique. Told from the perspective of a boy gaining his 'education' as a member of the Mafia-like Urkas in Transnistria, we get a glimpse inside the strict codes of honor and the rituals of this bizarre community. Besides having a deep distrust of outsiders - especially the police - the community is split into 'honest' and 'dishonest' criminals and crime is all-pervasive. Even their youngest children are taught to understand violence and when it is appropriate to use it. By the age of six Nicolai Lilin is given his first 'pike knife' by his uncle. By the age of twelve he is convicted of attempted murder.

The Nutcracker in 3D (2010)

Directed by Andrei Konchalovsky, probably known best for his work on Runaway Train and Tango & Cash to American audiences and Andrei Rublev (which he wrote with frequent collaborator Andrei Tartovsky) or Uncle Vanya for those who know their arthouse films, this film is certainly unique. A family film that was maybe a tad too dark for its own good, with rats dressed up in uniforms that, let's say are inspired by the fashions of Hugo Boss; electrocuted sharks, and did I forget to mention the Holocaust allegory? It's the rare children's film to have a complete 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. Yes, really. Is it really THAT bad?

Well, to me, no way. Does it deserve to be ranked among the great kids movies of our times? Probably not. Would I show it to very little kids? Again, probably not. But for slightly older kids and definitely for adults, there's a lot to admire. It definitely helps to understand the plot isn't based on the ballet. It uses the music by Tchaikovsky as basis for the score and the musical numbers by Tim Rice, but the actual plot is more akin to the story The Nutcracker and The Mouse King by E.T.A. Hoffmann. I haven't read the story yet so I can't say if it's accurate, but it helps to know in advance that it's not based on the plot of the ballet. In fact, if you get the chance, watch the Making Of after you're done watching the movie; it explains a lot of the more bizarre decisions that went into making the movie.

What makes the movie work for me? The acting's above-average, especially from Elle Fanning, John Turturro, Frances de la Tour and Richard E. Grant as Mary's father. The special effects are surprisingly pretty well-done, with the dance with the snowflakes in particular standing out as a fantastic scene (for a scene that took two years alone to make, it should look pretty darn good!) The technology of Rat World was very retro-futuristic, and I love that kind of stuff (the Rat Bikes and Ratcopter in particular stand out;) the musical score made pretty good use of the themes from The Nutcracker; the musical numbers, while I can see how they could bother people, I thought were pretty decent. The Nazi parable added a layer of menace to the rats, and it tied well into the time period of the 1920s the film is set in. Using the rats burning toys as a Holocaust parable I thought was particularly clever, showing the audience clearly the intention without actually killing anyone. Make of it what you will, though; I can understand how the Holocaust and Nazi imagery can throw people for a loop, considering it's in an adaptation of The Nutcracker, which is seen by the major populace as very bright and cheerful. If there's any complaints I have about the picture, it's this: The marketing on the movie was dreadful! What little trailers were done for the movie completely failed to sell the movie. Part of the problem was the title. What movie with "In 3D" in the title has ever done well financially? That, and the title was wrong too. Calling it JUST The Nutcracker (in 3D) was a particularly silly move; in fact, in the director's native Russia, the translated title is "The Nutcracker And The Rat King". Now, isn't that a far more fitting title? The film is, in terms of tone, very different from the Nutcracker ballet; and yet, the marketing said nothing about the fact that it was based on the Hoffman story; in fact, there wasn't even a credit in the movie to the Hoffmann story OR the Tchaikovsky ballet, not helping confusion. I think the movie is both neither Hoffmann and Tchaikovsky and both Hoffmann and Tchaikovsky; to me, the film is equal parts inspired by Hoffmann's story, the beautiful music of Tchaikovsky, with a personal touch by Konchalovsky with the 1920s setting and the Nazi/Holocaust themes. If you like your family films to be more akin to Return of Oz or Pinocchio, this film might be for you.

Oh, by the way, if you're going to say the movie's terrible, I have no problem with it, but please at least have the common courtesy to be constructive in your criticism. No need to be a jerk about it, is all I'm saying.

In 2010, Cowperthwaite completed the award winning feature length documentary, City LAX: An Urban Lacrosse Story. City LAX was acquired by ESPN and DirectTV.

In 2009, Cowperthwaite completed a film for UCLA International Medicine in conjunction with the International Rescue Committee, which focuses on clinics in war-torn regions, with the emphasis on providing ground-breaking medical care for victims of violence. It has been translated into three different languages and will be distributed in eight countries.

Cowperthwaite, who is Los Angeles based, is currently directing a campaign for Supply and Demand, a commercial directing agency based in New York and Los Angeles.

Perasaan ingin membalas dendam untuk Tok Long terus membara, tambahan pula dengan ilmu mempertahan diri yang penuh di dada, yang diturunkan sendiri oleh ayah angkat mereka. Kesempatan untuk meninggalkan kampung demi misi mencari Afran disalahgunakan oleh kesemua adik-beradik angkat itu. Selepas menjumpai Afran di awal misi, mereka meneruskan penjelajahan untuk menyelidik sejarah Tok Long. Pertembungan dengan Botak merupakan titik peralihan utama kepada pengembaraan mereka. Perkataan 'Lambang Merah' yang terkeluar daripada mulut botak semasa dia dipukul oleh orang-orang Man menarik perhatian Idrus dan adik-beradiknya. Akhirnya, Idrus dan adik beradik-angkatnya itu berjaya menyelamatkan Botak dan sebagai ganjaran, Botak menyediakan tempat tinggal dan kabel pekerjaan. Botak membawa mereka ke Joni Hitam. Joni Hitam merupakan orang kanan yang berpengaruh, yang berkhidmat di bawah payungan sebuah kumpulan gelap yang masyhur bernama Lambang Merah. Aksi daripada Giran dan Afran sudah cukup untuk meyakinkan Joni Hitam untuk mengambil kesemua adik-beradik angkat itu berada di bawah naungannya. Idrus terus bersetuju demi matlamat utamanya iaitu untuk mengbongkar rahsia yang terbenam didada Tok Long. Akibat potensi dan kerja tangan mereka, mereka akhirnya dihadapkan ke Tiger Lang iaitu Kepala kumpulan Lambang Merah. Tiger Lang mempelawa untuk terus duduk di bawah payungannya. Mereka juga akan diberikan kemewahan yang tidak mungkin mereka dapat di tempat lain. Idrus mula berasa was-was akan kumpulan itu kerana dikhuatiri dapat menyesatkan mereka, tetapi demi matlamat utamanya, dia tetap bersetuju. Tambahan pula dengan desakan keras daripada Giran yang semakin gilakan harta dan sudah mula lali dengan persekitaran yang gelap. Jauh di dalam hati Idrus, dia sudah dapat merasakan bahang akibat mengingkari arahan Tok Long tetapi tetap meneruskan pengembaraannya demi hati yang curiga. Tetapi, apa yang dirancang Idrus tidak menjadi. Akibat ditaburi kemewahan dan bergelumang dengan kejahatan, misi utama Idrus kelihatan semakin kelam kerana mereka semua sudah mulai lalai. Ternyata kerja-kerja haram dan gelap mampu mengaburi mata manusia. Ternyata cinta mampu membutakan perjalanan. Yang disangka teman, rupanya bukan. Dek kemewahan, mereka juga sanggup berbunuhan. Cinta dan dusta tidak dapat mereka bezakan kerana memilih kehidupan yang sedemikian. Hubungan di antara adik-beradik itu juga mula bergolak. Pengembaraan untuk mencari rahsia Tok Long terus pudar. Persoalan yang timbul bukan sahaja kemampuan mereka untuk membongkar rahsia Tok long, tetapi mampukah mereka kembali bersatu.

Podaa Podi

Arjun (Silambarasan), an animation artist living in London with his uncle (Ganesh), meets Nisha (Varalaxmi Sarathkumar) in a London pub. She is an aspiring dancer who is living with her aunt (Shobana). After going around together for a day, Nisha proposes a relationship and Arjun agrees. Arjun hates Nisha attending salsa classes with her friend Mojo as her partner. However, he agrees to marry her.
After their wedding, Nisha makes it clear that she still wants to dance and enter the UK competition 'Let's Dance', and make a career for herself. Arjun suddenly discovers that he is, at bottom, a "Pachai Thamizhan" who believes that a woman's place is in the home (preferably the kitchen, but she has the freedom to walk from one room to another if she wants). On the advice of his uncle, he makes her pregnant, so that she stays away from dancing.
Birth of their first child brings happiness to their family. They go to Hong Kong's Disneyland for a tour. After the tour, in a family conversation, Arjun's uncle mentions his "advice" of making Nisha pregnant so that she would not dance anymore. Realising that the child was the result of Arjun's cheap plan and not love towards her, Nisha walks out. Arjun tries to console her, but gets angry when she meets a friend who greets her with a hug. Arjun goes and starts fighting with her friend, while she pleads him to stop. Then, a car comes and kills their baby. They separate and live in sorrow. After several months, Arjun comes to Nisha and pleads her aunt to make her come back.
She comes back, on the condition that she continues dancing. Arjun beats up her partner Mojo, so that she will be left without a partner and leave the competition. She convinces Arjun to be her partner, but his steps fail in the first round. Impressed by Nisha dancing skills, judges give her another chance, provided she changes her partner. Arjun convinces her to do a "kuthu" dance, which impresses the judges. But she is not happy, because they have to clear 14 rounds to win the competition. Suddenly, Arjun decides to make her pregnant again. The movie ends with both of them living with their new child.
